New anti-fraud barrier with unauthorized agents

The Swedish Tax Agency strengthens protection against fraud through a new function to block unauthorized agent registration. The person who joins blocks the opportunity to apply on paper for all types of agents who can apply digitally.

We hope that everyone who can joins our blocking services. It’s an easy way to protect yourself from attempted fraud. The new barrier is for everyone, not just for those who otherwise have a representative, says Anders Bäck, unit manager at the Swedish Tax Agency.

The service also blocks the unauthorized change of address. It blocks the change of address on a paper form. At the end of May this year, 1.2 million people were connected to it.

We hope that many more will join. The Swedish Tax Agency cannot connect everyone automatically to these services, as not everyone has the opportunity to use e-identification. We need paper handling. But we can give a strong recommendation, for those who can, to spend two to three minutes activating both blocking services to increase their security, says Ingegerd Widell, business developer in the population register.

An agent can carry out matters or take part in information on behalf of a private person or a company in the Swedish Tax Agency’s e-services. There are different types of agents, usually declaration agents, for example. It is not possible as a representative to report someone else’s bank account for payment from the tax account, but a representative can see information that is not public.

In the Agents and Authorizations service, it is now possible to easily block the paper application for all types of agents who can be applied for digitally. The lock applies immediately when the change has been approved with e-identification.

The reason why the barriers have been developed is that there have been isolated cases of fraud and attempted fraud with paper forms. It is easy to connect to the services with e-identification via the Swedish Tax Agency’s website.

To minimize the risk of fraud with agent registrations on paper, there is also a built-in delay in the paper application for most types of agents. The authorization does not take effect until two weeks after registration. This is so that the information letter that always goes out to the person who receives a representative must arrive before the authorization starts. As a result, the authorization can be stopped before it enters into force if something should go wrong.
