There will be no extension of the measures that were intended to reduce costs and administration around health insurance.

The government has now announced that there will be no extension of the measures that were intended to reduce costs and administration around health insurance. This is the compensation for employers’ sick pay costs which, in their temporary reinforcement, is removed. This does not mean that employers do not receive compensation at all, but that the more generous subsidies introduced during the pandemic cease. Prior to the pandemic, employers were entitled to compensation for the part where sick pay costs exceed a certain fixed share of wage costs. It is called compensation for high sick pay costs and has a ceiling of SEK 250,000 for one year. However, this SEK 250,000 is in addition to what the employer may have received from the support. During October to December 2021, the employer can therefore receive up to SEK 250,000 in compensation according to ordinary rules.

During the pandemic, the employees received possible compensation for qualifying period deductions as well as self-employed people receiving compensation for qualifying period days. This was handled between the employee and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, so for the employer, the management of the sick pay period was not affected. This now ceases, which means that it is no longer possible to receive compensation corresponding to the qualifying period deduction. Another thing that was introduced during the pandemic, to reduce the burden on healthcare, was the deferred requirement for a medical certificate until day 15 of the sick pay period. Now we are back to the conditions that applied before the pandemic.

In order for the employer to be obliged to pay sick pay from the seventh calendar day after the day of notification of illness, the employee must prove the reduction in working capacity during this time through a certificate from a doctor or dentist. It is worth noting that the law states that the certificate does not need to contain further information about the illness the employee is suffering from. September 30 is also the last day for temporary compensation for people in risk groups who are at risk of becoming seriously ill from covid-19. This applies to those who have a job or are self-employed or are a relative of a risk group and who must completely or partially refrain from working in order to avoid being infected at work. On the other hand, you can receive compensation with temporary parental benefit when school or preschool closes due to the disease covid-19 until the end of January 2022.
